Objective

Emerging from Berlin’s post-unification planning guidelines, which favored a 19th-century architectural style, this project in Mitte, formerly East Berlin, offers a contemporary reinterpretation. A monolithic glass cube is enveloped by an L-shaped volume of metal latticework, creating an open space that respects the block’s perimeter. The cube and its wings rise from a raised parking platform connected by pedestrian bridges.

A ground-level vehicle access marks the start of the building’s zigzagging ascent through eight stories, offering city views and occasional breaks from the container form. The conference hall cantilevers five meters, and a glazed corridor overlooks Klosterstrasse. The entire program, from lobby to terrace, is subordinated to this promenade, blurring the distinction between served and serving spaces.
